Beach developers found out the hard way what happens when you don’t pay attention to well heeled residents who own million dollar houses near your development: They have the resources to fight back.
Tear-off flyers hit mailboxes over the past week highlighting several problematic developments slated for approval on the beach. Inside sources at the “Fort Lauderdale’s Future” email address tell HelloFLA that “the response has been overwhelming and hundreds of residents have registered their concerns.”
The commission, caught off guard by the upswell of opposition, voted unanimously to defer the Bahia Mar redevelopment project until after the new year. This gives both sides an opportunity to gear up for what could potentially be an all out grassroots campaign in Fort Lauderdale with implications bleeding into the March 2017 city elections, where potentially 4 seats will be up for grabs.
Now, sources say the “old guard” crop of consultants is scrambling to protect their turf, and lamenting the need to deal with the new techniques being employed to fight development.
“These fuckers are going to lead us to the grave.”
