City Council approves rezoning for Southbank self-storage

The City Council has approved the rezoning that will allow for the construction of a 136,000 square feet self-storage facility as part of a mixed-use project at 1004 Hendricks Ave in downtown's Southbank, despite strong opposition from residents and the Downtown Development Review Board staff. The decision came after a three-year debate, and was supported by arguments that included the inclusion of affordable housing units in the project. The approval includes conditions such as dedicating part of the ground floor to restaurant and retail space, and limiting the self-storage hours of operations. The developer will now focus on the project's design, following recommendations from the DDRB.

Haines City sports academy files for Chapter 11, seeks investors to redevelop property

Garret Kenny, the owner of the Balmoral Resort in Haines City, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to halt foreclosure and legal actions initiated by investors. The resort, which includes a sports academy, struggled to generate revenue, prompting Kenny to seek bankruptcy protection. He aims to restructure the resort's debt, potentially by selling the property or seeking investors for a new condominium project. The bankruptcy filing reveals defaults on loans from Seacoast Bank, as well as debts owed to other creditors including CMP Financial Holdings and Lynk Capital. Additionally, the resort faces multiple lawsuits, and its legal representative has requested the use of cash collateral to cover ongoing expenses during the bankruptcy proceedings.

Hillsborough County could prioritize road projects near Riverview over those in Tampa

A proposal to prioritize road projects in the southeastern Tampa suburbs has been put forward by Hillsborough County Commissioner Michael Owen. The proposal suggests that roads in the newly expanded urban service area should receive priority over other transportation projects. However, the idea faced opposition at a meeting of the Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). The TPO, along with other county leaders, emphasized ongoing efforts to study the expanded urban service area and prioritize transportation projects. The expansion is motivated by projected population growth in the area, necessitating changes to infrastructure and development policies. While some commissioners support the proposal, others feel it is too extreme and advocate for prioritizing existing urban service areas with inadequate sewer and wastewater systems. The issue will continue to be discussed in future meetings.

978 apartments planned on site of Fort Lauderdale mobile home park

The Pan American Estates Mobile Home Park in Fort Lauderdale's Cypress Creek area is planned for replacement with 978 apartments. The city's Development Review Committee is set to consider the site plan and a pending rezoning application for the property on April 23. The current owner, Cypress Development LLC, intends to develop the 24.4-acre site into a mixed-use complex with 10 buildings ranging from five to eight stories and totaling 1.01 million square feet. The project would also include amenities such as pools, clubhouse, pickleball courts, and a park. The sale of the property occurred in October 2023, and the new development plan has met with some controversy due to the displacement of low-income residents.

Federal money eyed for Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota

Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library supporters in North Dakota are celebrating new federal legislation that would provide funding for the library's construction and to showcase artifacts of the 26th president. The bill would authorize a $50 million Interior Department grant, with the majority allocated towards creating museum spaces in the facility. The construction, which costs $333 million, has been largely covered by private donations, with $240 million already raised. The library is expected to open in 2026. The bill also requires a two-thirds match from non-federal sources and prohibits federal money from funding the library's maintenance or operations. While some state officials expressed concerns about taxpayer funding, the library remains privately held and follows a model similar to other presidential libraries.

‘Atrocious cruelty’: Haitian community leaders condemn Biden administration’s resumption of deportations to Haiti

The U.S. government's decision to resume deportations to Haiti amid ongoing gang violence and humanitarian crisis has drawn strong criticism from Haitian community leaders in South Florida. U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and other officials condemned the deportations as "atrocious cruelty" and "repulsive," highlighting the dire living conditions in Haiti. Despite the previous suspension of deportations due to the lawlessness in the capital city, deportations have now resumed. The Department of Homeland Security's statement emphasized the enforcement of U.S. laws and policy in the region. Additionally, a recent interdiction near the South Florida coast revealed Haitian migrants on board a yacht, who were subsequently repatriated. The ongoing deportations have sparked concerns about the impact on an already fragile and complex situation in Haiti.

Red states fight growing efforts to give ‘basic income’ cash to residents

South Dakota state Sen. John Wiik, a Republican, has successfully sponsored legislation banning cities or counties from implementing basic income programs, which provide direct cash payments to low-income residents. Wiik and other Republicans argue that such programs disincentivize work and could lead to dependence on government handouts. On the other hand, advocates of such programs argue that they can increase financial stability and overall well-being. The debate over basic income programs is intensifying, with GOP officials in at least six states looking to ban them, while some blue states are seeking to expand pilot programs. Researchers have found that basic income programs can have positive impacts on financial stability and well-being. Despite the pushback in some states, recent polling shows broad support for basic income programs. Supporters argue that basic income programs provide recipients with the freedom of choice and have the potential to address poverty on a broader scale. Various basic income pilot programs across the country have shown promising results, with evidence of improved employment, financial stability, and well-being among recipients. However, the sustainability and scalability of these programs remain a topic of discussion among lawmakers.

Florida lawmakers must live in their districts; this Orlando Democrat hasn’t always reported living there

Democratic lawmaker Rep. Bruce Hadley Antone, who has been elected seven times to the state House in Florida, has faced questions about his residency eligibility after it was revealed that he listed his addresses outside the legislative districts where he was elected. Antone changed his residential address to an aide's apartment in response to inquiries, claiming he forgot to update his voting records. There are discrepancies in his various listed addresses over the years, including properties owned by him, his wife, and others where he has claimed to reside. These actions raise concerns about his eligibility to hold office, as Florida law requires candidates to live and be registered to vote in the district they are running for at the time of the election and maintain residence throughout their term. The case adds to a recent controversy involving another Florida lawmaker, Rep. Michael Redondo, regarding his residency and election for the House District 118 seat. Antone's case has attracted attention as it raises questions about the qualifications and residency of elected officials in the state.

Dean Phillips gains his first delegates. Here’s why they’ll likely vote for Biden at the convention

Former presidential candidate Dean Phillips is set to receive at least three of Ohio's delegates to the Democratic National Convention, despite having dropped out of the race and endorsed President Joe Biden. However, it is expected that these delegates will ultimately support Biden. The overwhelming majority of convention delegates have already been won by Biden, making it difficult for any other candidate to be eligible for the nomination. Additionally, it is becoming nearly impossible for any candidate other than Biden to reach the nomination threshold. Phillips' campaign has confirmed that it will encourage its Ohio delegates to vote for Biden. At this stage, it is unlikely for any other candidate to reach the delegate threshold needed for consideration, with Biden having already secured enough delegates to win the nomination. Phillips, along with Jason Palmer from American Samoa and the "uncommitted" option, are among the few non-Biden choices to receive delegates. Palmer, who won three delegates in American Samoa, has also endorsed Biden and is focused on ensuring his delegates can attend the convention.

Dean Phillips gains his first delegates. Here’s why they’ll likely vote for Biden at the convention

Former presidential candidate Dean Phillips will receive at least three delegates from Ohio to the Democratic National Convention, despite dropping out and endorsing President Joe Biden. However, these delegates will effectively represent support for Biden, as he has already secured the Democratic nomination. Meanwhile, efforts to oppose Biden's nomination, such as encouraging voters to choose the "uncommitted" option as a protest against his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict, have gained limited traction. In Ohio, Phillips qualifies for delegates in three congressional districts, but they are expected to pledge their support for Biden. With the majority of delegates already allocated to Biden, it is unlikely for any other candidate to reach the 300-delegate threshold required to be considered for the nomination. Similarly, former candidate Jason Palmer, who won three delegates in American Samoa, also endorses Biden and is working to ensure his delegates can attend the convention.

What to watch for in Tuesday's Pennsylvania primaries

Pennsylvania primary voters will participate in critical races in the battleground state, including a fiercely contested Democratic primary around Pittsburgh and a primary in eastern Pennsylvania featuring a moderate Republican fending off a right-wing challenger. A coalition of groups urging Democrats to write "uncommitted" in the presidential primary as a protest against President Joe Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war has also garnered attention. The outcome of these primaries in the evenly divided state could offer clues about the November election. Additionally, the primaries will solidify matchups in several competitive House districts and set up a key contest in the fight for control of the Senate between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and Republican challenger Dave McCormick. The results of the primaries may have implications for the balance of power in the Senate and Congress.

Fight over reproductive rights takes center stage in Florida with presidential visit

Florida is set to implement a six-week abortion ban, making it one of the most restrictive states for abortion access. President Joe Biden has criticized the law, while activists continue to debate the issue. Amendment Four, a ballot measure in November, aims to prohibit laws that restrict abortion before viability or for health reasons. Critics argue the wording is vague, while supporters emphasize the importance of women's freedom and privacy in making personal healthcare decisions. The amendment requires at least 60% of voters' approval to pass.

Biden blames Trump for Florida’s 6-week abortion ban, says women nationwide face health crisis

President Joe Biden accused former President Donald Trump of being responsible for the recent wave of abortion restrictions across the country, specifically in Florida, where a six-week abortion ban is set to take effect on May 1. Biden framed the issue as a healthcare crisis for women and emphasized the importance of voting to address this. The president aims to leverage the momentum against abortion restrictions for his re-election campaign, particularly in battleground states. Meanwhile, advocates are working to gather support for a ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights in Florida's constitution. The state Supreme Court upheld the 15-week abortion ban, clearing the way for the new ban on procedures after six weeks of pregnancy. The efforts of making the abortion issue nonpartisan are apparent, as supporters seek to garner broad voter support for the ballot initiative. However, Republicans dismiss the Democratic Party's focus on abortion as a political tactic, emphasizing other key issues. The article also mentions that voter backlash against increasing abortion restrictions could be a liability for Republicans.

Polling indicates abortion issue a problem for Florida GOP – and comparisons with reactions to slavery

Florida Republicans have shifted to the right on abortion over the years, with Governor Ron DeSantis facing declining popularity, primarily attributed to his signing of a six-week abortion ban. This move has become a focal point, overshadowing other contentious issues such as rising living costs and lack of climate mitigation. The comparison is drawn between the GOP's obsession with banning abortion and the historical southern Democrats' fixation on expanding slavery. The prediction is that the reaction to the Dobbs decision may prompt a similar awakening as with slavery, potentially impact the political landscape in Florida and beyond in the years to come.

The drug war devastated Black and other minority communities. Is marijuana legalization helping?

Sam Ward Jr., a Black man who was previously incarcerated on federal drug charges, has opened a cannabis store in Washington, reflecting the state's efforts to make the legal marijuana industry more accessible to individuals affected by the war on drugs. While many states have implemented "social equity" provisions to redress the harm caused by disproportionate drug law enforcement, the effectiveness of these programs has been hindered by legal challenges, corporate acquisitions of social equity licenses, and difficulties in finding locations and obtaining bank loans. Washington recently issued its first social equity retail licenses, with officials working to address zoning bans and provide financial support to licensees. Ward's story is emblematic of the state's hope for the success of the social equity program, which aims to support individuals like him in becoming successful business owners. Other individuals, such as David Penn Jr., are also navigating challenges as they establish their businesses and receive state support.

Joe Biden backs Debbie Mucarsel-Powell during Tampa visit

President Joe Biden publicly endorsed former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell's Senate campaign, urging her to defeat incumbent U.S. Sen. Rick Scott during his visit to Tampa. This indication of support comes amid the belief that Florida will be a battleground in the upcoming election, with a focus on social security and abortion laws. Mucarsel-Powell faces a Democratic Primary against businessman Stanley Campbell, and Biden's endorsement may signal her as the inevitable nominee. Additionally, there were comments by Scott's campaign criticizing Biden and Mucarsel-Powell's agenda as "heinously radical." Biden's rally in Tampa also included support for U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor. Mucarsel-Powell emphasized on social media the importance of voting to change the political landscape in Florida.

Analysis: Voters got first true 2024 week with Trump on trial, Biden on the trail

In the 2024 election cycle, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump engaged in contrasting activities, with Biden campaigning in Pennsylvania while Trump attended his first criminal trial in a New York courtroom. Observers noted the unique nature of a sitting president running for reelection against a former one on trial. Republican strategist Brian Seitchik highlighted that the election will focus on which candidate can keep the voters focused on his opponent. Recent polls showed a close race nationally and in key swing states, with Biden narrowing Trump's lead in some battlegrounds. Biden continued to emphasize access to abortion and democratic norms, while Trump criticized the fairness of his trial. Additionally, Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna noted a recent polling surge for Biden, attributing it to a communications strategy shift. Overall, the 2024 election is shaping up to be highly contested, with both candidates actively engaging in campaigning and legal proceedings.

Trump hush money trial transcripts to be made public

New York Courts have announced that the transcripts of Donald Trump’s hush money trial will be posted online and made publicly available the following business day. This decision aims to provide broad and continuous public access to the high-profile case, as trial proceedings are not broadcast and space inside the courtroom for public attendance is limited. The move is intended to promote judicial transparency and enhance public understanding of the courts and justice system, aligning with the court system's commitment to openness. National Enquirer made up the story about Ted Cruz's father and Lee Harvey Oswald, former publisher says

Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker testified at Donald Trump's trial, revealing that the tabloid fabricated a negative story in 2016 about the father of Sen. Ted Cruz, who was Trump's rival for the GOP presidential nomination. Trump promoted the story, alleging Cruz's father had a connection to JFK's assassin. Pecker stated that the tabloid faked the story at the direction of Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, and suggested Trump was directly involved. The prosecution also entered evidence of negative articles about other Republican candidates and indicated Cohen's involvement in directing their publication. Cruz and Rubio responded to the revelations, with Cruz calling Trump a "pathological liar" and Rubio's office not commenting.

Trump meets with a senior Japanese official after court session in his hush money trial

Former President Donald Trump hosted former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso at Trump Tower in New York. Trump praised Aso as a highly respected figure and emphasized their personal connection through their mutual friend, the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. This meeting is part of a series of interactions between Trump and foreign leaders, raising speculation about the potential impact of a Trump presidency on global relations. Supreme Court hears Starbucks union case

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in the case involving Starbucks and the National Labor Relations Board. The dispute centers around the labor board’s authority to compel Starbucks to rehire seven workers in Memphis, Tennessee, who were allegedly fired for organizing a union. Starbucks contends that the workers were dismissed for policy violations, while the NLRB has supported the employees' claims. The issue is particularly significant given the recent wave of unionization at Starbucks locations nationwide. Despite delays in negotiating union contracts and implementing certain benefits, some progress has been made. In one instance, credit card tipping options were reinstated for unionized workers. This situation underscores the ongoing tensions between Starbucks and its unionized employees, and the upcoming Supreme Court decision holds implications for their labor rights.

Tennessee lawmakers pass bill to allow armed teachers, a year after deadly Nashville shooting

Tennessee House Republicans faced protests as they passed a bill allowing some teachers and staff to carry concealed handguns on public school grounds, while barring parents and other teachers from knowing who is armed. The 68-28 vote sent the bill to Republican Gov. Bill Lee, who is likely to support it. The proposal follows last year's deadly shooting at a Nashville elementary school. The bill's sponsor cited the need for a deterrent against shootings, while Democrats argued against it. The measure requires staff to have a handgun carry permit, written authorization from the school principal and law enforcement, a background check, and 40 hours of handgun training. The bill faced strong opposition from members of the public and some lawmakers, but its passage is expected to significantly expand gun access in the state.

Marjorie Taylor Greene calls on Johnson to resign after foreign aid bills pass: ‘If he doesn’t do so, he will be vacated’

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson for supporting a foreign aid package, threatening to push for his resignation or ouster. The $95 billion aid package, including $61 billion for Ukraine and regional partners, was approved by the House with 210 Democrats and 101 Republicans voting in favor. Greene and other Republicans have indicated support for ousting Johnson, whose slim majority may require Democratic support to remain in office. Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna expressed willingness to save Johnson, stating he did the right thing despite their policy differences. Johnson, however, remains confident, dismissing concerns about a potential ouster. Democrats' support for Johnson is uncertain, with Greene blaming him for the possible move to remove him from the speakership.

The House votes for possible TikTok ban in the US, but don't expect the app to go away anytime soon

The House of Representatives passed a bill that would ban the popular social media platform TikTok in the United States unless its China-based owner, ByteDance Ltd., sells its stake within a year. The bill, which forms part of a larger foreign aid package and received broad congressional support, was fast-tracked after earlier versions stalled in the Senate. The modified measure, passed by a 360-58 vote, now goes to the Senate, which includes a nine-month deadline for the company to sell, with a possible additional three months if a sale is in progress. TikTok has lobbied against the legislation, arguing that it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their First Amendment rights, and has indicated it would likely go to court to try and block the law if it passes. Lawmakers have voiced national security concerns about the app's China-based owner and its potential threat to the U.S., leading to the passage of the bill, which is unusual in its targeting of a single company. The bill reflects widespread concerns about China among lawmakers, who worry about potential Chinese government influence over the app. The legislation has garnered significant pushback, with organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union backing the app, and content creators expressing anxiety about the potential impacts of the bill. Despite the challenges, the House's decision represents a significant step in the ongoing debate over TikTok's presence in the United States.

The bipartisan bill extends the program for two years, allowing the U.S. government to collect the communications of non-Americans abroad without a warrant for foreign intelligence purposes. Hawaii lawmakers take aim at vacation rentals after Lahaina wildfire amplifies Maui housing crisis

Following a devastating fire in Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui, the exorbitant rental prices, largely driven by vacation rentals, have resulted in a housing crisis. The fire destroyed housing for 6,200 families, exacerbating an already acute housing shortage in Maui. Lawmakers are considering bills to phase out short-term rentals across Hawaii as they are seen to inflate housing costs, disrupt neighborhoods, and contribute to the migration of locals to less expensive states. However, short-term rental owners argue that a phase-out would violate their property rights and potentially push them into foreclosure. The situation in Lahaina has prompted discussions about the need for regulation and reform of existing laws to address the housing crisis and ensure the welfare of the community.

Hawaii lawmakers take aim at vacation rentals after Lahaina wildfire amplifies Maui housing crisis

The devastating fire in Lahaina, Maui, in August intensified the acute housing shortage, raising concerns about the impact of vacation rentals on the community. The wildfire destroyed housing for 6,200 families, leading to exorbitant rental prices and driving out service industry workers. Lawmakers are considering bills to give counties the authority to phase out short-term rentals, sparked by frustrations over the impact of these rentals on local housing availability. The migration of locals and Native Hawaiians due to rising housing costs is a major concern, exacerbated by the displacement caused by the fire. The conflict highlights a struggle between the economic benefits of vacation rentals and their impact on the local community and housing market.
